Racing 23rd June Tony's Report

Wind force 1
Course racing

Temp 28 degrees

Thursday Night Racing June 23rd

Is it racing drifting about in 5 miles of wind? I sometimes have my doubts. Nevertheless 10 brave souls converged on the start line, all be it at a snails pace. The fleet seemed to be split into three categories

1 The Pumpers, these guys have only one idea in life. Pump there way round the course in an effort to out pump their fellow competitors

2. Pump occasionally if anyone gets too near

3. I’m not going to pump at all; I’m just going to drift aimlessly round.

With these three attitudes, its difficult to get a competitive race, the Pumpers are always going to win.

But pumpers and all left the start line roughly together. Chief Pumper Dave Ellis propelled himself into the lead, his main rival Mike George getting a dreadful start, as did Phil Young as he drifted the wrong side of the start line. The lake manager and official starter surprisingly got quite a good start, despite the fact that in one hand he had the stop watch, the other the whistle, while hanging onto the boom with his teeth.

The first mark sort of drifted into view. Dave led the way similar to a Mallard duck leading his chicks out on their first watery outing. The chicks followed sometime later and roughly all together, there was a bit of barging and cheeping at this first mark, Tony took it too wide and forced several even wider, while Tim nipped into second and Clive by some miracle actually went past Tony without hitting him (is he loosing his touch I ask myself, or was there some other dastardly plan a foot). Meanwhile Mike was pumping his way through the fleet.

At the next Mark Dave was still in front and went off on the port tack to the next Buoy. Mike followed having now disposed of the rest of the competitors. Clive was flapping around like a deranged moth round a light, in third, while Tim followed in his wake. The PUMPERS were all now pulling away from the MAY BE PUMPERS and the NOT BLOODY LIKELY PUMPERS

Tony was fifth (NBLP) while Phil (MBP) slowly closed the gap. Chris (MBP) came next, while John Andel (CBP) (CAN’T BLOODY PUMP) came next. Mark and Annette (NBLP) appeared to be having their own race and despite being given extremely up market race machines, seemed totally bemused as to how you made them work.

Dave continued to lead Mike to the next mark, tacking to cover Mikes every move (apparently something to do with counting to 20 before putting the cover tack in, all frightfully technical and totally lost on most of us). The rest of us mostly decided there was more wind on the starboard side and headed in that direction. The dead run down to the penultimate mark, could hardly be described as exciting, the Lake manager was seen nodding off.

Rounding the last mark, Dave pumped home first, Mike came second and Tim pumped through Clive for third (Clive was of the opinion that if he had mastered the downwind pumping, his board speed though the water would have undoubtedly caused him to plane regardless of the fact that there was no bloody wind and then he would have won!, he was apparently going to practice with his duvet when he got home.)

Tony finished some way back in fifth, while Phil nearly caught him in sixth, Chris came 7th, while John drifted in 8th. As for Mark and Annette, well what can I say? One minute they were with us, the next they had drifted into walley’s corner and were gone sometime. When they did eventually return, Mark crossed the line in 9th with a huge grin on his face while a slightly dishevelled Annette followed close behind (read in that what you will)

GOOD RACE? Better than doing the garden I guess!
